Richard is a dear friend and the persona of a warrior set in ancient times suits him to a tee. The legend of Troy inspires this painting in which we see the burning city reduced to ruins in the background. In the soldier’s fixed gaze, hangs the weight of resignation and inevitable loss….. the degradation of war….. the result of a prince’s folly and a king’s ego. Here in this painting, the observer has to decide if the soldier is Greek or Trojan. In either case, this was not the end of his journey. The epic legend of Homer’s Iliad, gives birth to a multitude of mythical tales, an inspiration to endless paintings and sculpture.
